Shake off loose hair first, then machine-wash without bleach or fabric softener and tumble dry.
Always use less detergent than recommended, since the rinse cycle should wash out any detergent or other residue. We love enzyme washes also from time to time.
Fabric softener coats the fibers, so towels absorb less and stay damp longer, which is where odor starts.
Between washes, hang the towel by its loop so air reaches both sides.
